The sexual assault forensic exam is performed by a SART (Sexual Assault Response Team) nurse who is trained specifically to collect the evidence and to provide medication for the prevention of pregnancy and STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases).

The SART nurse will ask you to sign a consent form in order to conduct the exam.

The nurse will be asking you specific details of the sexual assault. This may feel embarrassing, but it is important for determining the different charges against the suspect.

The clothing worn during the sexual assault may be collected by the police officer. If your clothes are taken while at the hospital, a new change of clothing will be provided by your rape crisis advocate.

You will be asked to provide a urine sample to test for pregnancy and any present rape drugs.

  • Fingernail scrapings

  • Mouth swabs

  • Hair samples

  • Detection of fluids left on the skin using a black light

  • Pelvic exam

  • Pictures of any bruising

  • Blood tests for STDs

  • A baseline HIV test if needed
